How to Get an Instant CNC Machining Quote (Step-by-Step)

Getting a price for custom machined parts used to mean emails, phone calls, and days of waiting. Today you can get a CNC machining quote by uploading a CAD file and receiving feedback fast. This guide walks through exactly how to request a quote, what information speeds it up, and what drives the price.

What is an instant CNC machining quote?

An instant (or rapid) CNC machining quote is a price and lead-time estimate generated from your 3D model and requirements. You upload a CAD file, specify material, tolerances, finish, and quantity, and our engineering team reviews manufacturability and returns a quote — often within hours rather than days. It removes guesswork early so you can plan budget and timeline before committing.

Step 1 — Prepare your CAD files

The quote starts with geometry. For accurate pricing, provide a 3D model in one of these formats:

  • STEP (.step / .stp) — preferred, universal and reliable
  • IGES (.igs / .iges)
  • Parasolid (.x_t)
  • STL — acceptable for simple parts, but less precise for tolerancing

If you only have a physical sample or a 2D sketch, we can help with reverse engineering or modeling — just tell us in your request.

Step 2 — Add a 2D drawing for critical tolerances

A 3D model defines shape, but a 2D drawing (DWG or PDF) communicates the details that affect cost and quality: critical dimensions, GD&T callouts, thread specs, surface roughness (Ra), and inspection requirements. Parts with looser tolerances are cheaper; only tighten what the application truly needs. Learn more on our CNC machining services page.

Step 3 — Specify material, finish, and quantity

Three choices strongly influence your quote:

  • Material — e.g. aluminum 6061, stainless 304/316, brass, titanium, ABS, POM, or PEEK
  • Surface finish — as-machined, anodizing, bead blasting, powder coating, or plating
  • Quantity — from a single prototype to low-volume production; higher volumes lower the unit price

Not sure which material suits your part? Our team can recommend cost-effective options during the DFM review.

Step 4 — Upload and submit your request

Go to our Request a Quote page, upload your CAD file (and drawing), enter material, finish, quantity, and any notes, and submit. Files are handled confidentially, and an NDA can be arranged on request. You will receive a response with pricing, lead time, and any manufacturability suggestions.

What affects your CNC machining quote price?

Understanding cost drivers helps you design for affordability:

  • Part complexity — deep pockets, thin walls, and 5-axis features add machining time
  • Material — harder or exotic alloys (titanium, stainless) cost more than aluminum
  • Tolerances — tighter tolerances require slower machining and more inspection
  • Surface finish — secondary finishing adds steps and cost
  • Quantity — setup cost is amortized over more parts at higher volumes

For a deeper breakdown, see our guide on what drives CNC milling and machining costs.

How fast will you get your quote?

Simple parts with clean files are often quoted the same business day. More complex assemblies, multiple parts, or special materials may take a little longer because our engineers review each for manufacturability. Either way, you get a human-checked quote — not just an automated number that changes after review.

Tips for a faster, more accurate quote

  • Send a STEP file plus a dimensioned 2D drawing
  • Mark only the critical tolerances — avoid blanket tight tolerances
  • State the material grade and finish clearly
  • Include quantity and target delivery date
  • Add the application or industry so we can advise on the best process
