This comparison is for aerospace procurement, supplier-quality and engineering teams deciding what evidence to request from a CNC machining supplier. It is not a certification audit, legal advice or a substitute for the customer contract. The most useful answer to “does a CNC supplier need AS9100?” is conditional: the requirement belongs to the programme and supply-chain flow-down, not to the word aerospace by itself.

AS9100 vs ISO 9001: what each standard answers

ISO 9001 asks whether an organisation has a general quality-management system that is established, controlled, evaluated and improved. AS9100 asks for that foundation plus additional requirements tailored to aviation, space and defense supply chains. IAQG states that the 9100 series is based on ISO 9001 requirements and supplemented by additional aerospace quality-management requirements. Neither standard by itself approves a drawing, certifies a part for flight or replaces customer-specific qualification.

Does a CNC supplier need AS9100?

Sometimes. A supplier may need AS9100 when the prime, customer, contract, purchase order or programme quality clause explicitly flows that requirement down. Another programme may accept an ISO 9001 supplier after a customer audit, a source-approval process or a defined work package. A part's end use alone does not let a buyer infer the answer, and a supplier should not promise acceptance without reading the actual requirements.

  1. Read the flow-down. Look for AS9100/9100-series wording, customer-approved-source rules, quality clauses, FAI, traceability and special-process requirements.
  2. Separate certification from qualification. Identify whether the requirement is a QMS certificate, a customer approval, a specific process approval, a part approval or a controlled documentation package.
  3. Check the part risk. Structural, safety-critical, key-characteristic or special-process work may trigger deeper controls even when the certificate wording is not obvious.
  4. Ask who owns acceptance. The buyer, prime or design authority may retain approval of deviations, concessions, FAI and final use.
  5. Confirm alternate paths in writing. If ISO 9001 plus customer audit or source approval is acceptable, get that acceptance from the authorised programme contact before placing the order.

This decision path prevents two common errors: rejecting a technically suitable supplier because a generic checklist says “aerospace equals AS9100,” or accepting a certificate as a substitute for the actual customer and product requirements.

A certificate describes a management-system scope. It does not automatically prove that a supplier can make every alloy, tolerance, geometry or special process in your drawing. It also does not create authorisation for controlled technical data or regulated activity.

Use those sources for the relevant verification step, not as a substitute for your own programme review.

How to qualify an aerospace CNC supplier

  1. Start with the programme. Collect the drawing, customer quality clauses, applicable specifications, delivery destination and required records.
  2. Verify certificate scope. Ask for the current certificate, site/address, activities covered, validity dates and issuing certification body.
  3. Use the right registry. For 9100-series claims, check the IAQG OASIS route and reconcile the supplier identity and scope. IAQG explains that the certification scheme uses accredited third-party certification bodies.
  4. Test the work package. Review a sample FAI, CMM report, material certificate and change-control record or agree when those records will be generated.
  5. Confirm capability separately. Match machines, materials, tolerances, finishing, inspection equipment, outside processes and capacity to the actual drawing.
  6. Write the acceptance path. Define who approves FAI, deviations, concessions, process changes and final shipment release.
