What belongs on a CNC-ready engineering drawing?

A drawing is most useful when it lets design, manufacturing and inspection discuss the same revision. The ASME Y14.5 overview describes dimensioning and tolerancing as a common language; the applicable standard and revision should be identified by the buyer where required.

Release workflow for a machined-part drawing

  1. Start from function: identify mating surfaces, interfaces and features that affect assembly or verification.
  2. Select clear views: add section or detail views where a feature cannot be read reliably in the main projection.
  3. Define relationships: dimension from functional references and use datum references where geometric control is needed.
  4. Control the package: align drawing, CAD, material, finish and revision identifier before sharing.
  5. Review and release: resolve questions, then have the buyer issue the approved design and acceptance criteria.

Use datum references to protect assembly intent

Datums are not merely convenient edges for dimensioning. They establish a reference framework for the relationships that matter to the part’s function. What to send for engineering review

Is a 3D model enough for a CNC machining drawing package?
A model supports geometry review. Add a controlled drawing when tolerances, datum references, threads, finishes, notes or inspection requirements must be communicated explicitly.
Who approves a drawing after DFM feedback?
The buyer retains final responsibility for design, specification, deviation decisions and release approval. Supplier feedback can identify manufacturing questions for the buyer to resolve.
What should the title block control?
Use it to identify the part, document revision, units, drawing standard where applicable, material notes and other controlled-document information needed by the project.
When should I add a section view?
Add one when internal geometry, a bore, a pocket or another feature cannot be described clearly by the primary orthographic views and dimensions.
Can inspection requirements be assumed from a drawing?
No. Identify critical characteristics and discuss any requested inspection documentation against the drawing and agreed order.
